Why We Need $4M
Why We Need $4M

Yes, you read that number correctly. We estimate we need to raise $4M through Kickstarter to fund our family-values, Christian movie, “Key West:  The Conch Republic.”

If I were you, the first question I’d ask is, “Four million bucks is a lot of money. Why do you need that much money?  What are you going to do with it? Who gets that money? Are you going to take that money and “pay” yourselves?”

Let me explain where the money will go. But first, a little background information is in order.

If you are reading this blog, you may have seen Kickstarter and are aware of our movie project, Key West: The Conch Republic, a family-valued film inspired by Psalm 91. Let me take a quick moment to recap the concept:  As the title hints, the movie takes place in Key West in the early 1980s. It’s based on actual events when Key West, for a brief period of time, seceded from the US. During this secession, a visiting pastor and his family go to Key West, and their youngest daughter, Natalie, and her mischievous friend, Angel, a white pelican, touch the lives of everyone there.

We are so excited about this script. We want to bring it to life through this project so everyone can experience it. But bringing it to life takes money.  Proverbs 13:11 states, “Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.” We’d like to apply that to our film project. We are honest in our request for funding for this project. We are asking for a lot of money, but we know that little by little, we can get this project funded. We are confident that there are thousands of Christians like us who want to see more family-focused, prayer not scare type Christian films. And remember, with Kickstarter, the entire project must be funded or we get nothing.

So back to the money – the bulk of the money that we need will go to production costs, include hiring a director and securing actors. Believe it or not, many actors in Christian films are not paid. Taking that further, many Christian actors are out of work because they are not always welcome in Hollywood. We’d like to use this film, and hopefully future sequels, to employ these men and women and support them in their faith and profession. Additionally, funds are needed for the production crew, pre- and post- production activities, travel expenses for everyone involved, marketing, and more. The costs quickly add up, however, the producers of the movie will not receive any money that is donated through Kickstarter.  The goal is to use money from the movie’s theater ticket sales and DVD sales to fund the sequel, which is already written. The producers will only make money through ticket sales and DVD sales, and of course, the project first has to be funded.

Add up the costs and you are quickly at $4M.  Our movie budget is almost a half-inch thick, but here are some of the higher level budget items (but just consider the credits at the end of any film to see how many people are involved in the production and need to be paid):

  • Actors & Actresses     $1,653,000
  • Movie Director/Producer    $190,000
  • Film crew/support staff    $700,000
  • Food       $245,000
  • Travel       $135,000
  • Hotel       $360,000
  • Post Production/CG     $170,000
  • Legal/Permits      $70,000
